It has been a long road, but I am finally getting the chance to represent the USA in an Olympic Games. When I was a 5th grader day dreaming about scoring the winning goal in the gold medal soccer game, I had no idea that I would eventually stop playing soccer to become a distance runner with a similar dream. When I was hammering out 400’s or mile repeats in training and then throwing down top national times in the 1500 and 3200 as a sophomore in high school, I thought my potential was limitless, and I again dreamed of gold, |

Come and bid farewell to Amber as she pepares to leave for Olympic competition. The send off celebration will be an open house to meet Amber and wish her good luck in Beijing, China. Simultaneously, Amber will be hosting a Silent Auction with proceeds to benefit the US Womens Cycling Development Program and also to help Amber to bring family members to Beijing to watch her race in person. The Giro for women took place last week. We had a prologue followed by 8 stages. Most of the race took place in the northern parts of Italy, however, we did have a stage in the Toscana region. My team consisted of Dutch Olympian Mirjam Melchers van Poppel, Swedish Olympian Susanne Ljungskog, Danish Olympian Trine Schmidt, and Dutch superstars Iris Slappendale, Loes Markerink, and Elisabeth Braam. |

I think I spelled it right this time;) The Bira stage race took place last week in the Basque region of Spain. Bilbao was the biggest town in the area, and I think one of the few that didn’t have an “X” in it. (I am not very familiar with the Basque language, but I think there are as many “x’s” used as there are climbs!) |

I know that sounds really glamorous, however, consider the fact that I just made a trans-Atlantic flight two weeks ago, I am headed to some kind of “race hotel” for the week, and then I will be back on another trans-Atlantic flight in seven days. Of course in between I am doing what I love to do, and what I am so blessed to do, which is to race my bike!!! In my humble opinion, there is not a cooler job in the world. BUT, just remember that we are women, and the sport is cycling. The budgets are small, the travel is in the sardine section, and the hotels might have stars associated with them. The payoff is the chance to live and pursue a dream. |
