A for Alvin or Amber?

Is that chipmunk Alvin, or is that me? About 5 – 6 weeks ago, my wisdom teeth went through a major growth spurt.  Since I am not a fan of ANY kind of dental procedure, I have put off the extraction of these third molars…ooohhhhh… for many years.  They weren’t bothering me, so I didn’t perceive them to be a problem or even a potential problem.  Yes, one was poking out the side and another had already pierced the skin a little, but they didn’t hurt, and I just denied they were there.

But then… all of a sudden… I think the hair on my legs stopped growing, while my teeth shot up and out and cried for some attention.  My cheek was getting chewed up, and my jaw was quite sore.  I decided that I better get this taken care of now, while I had control over the situation as opposed to getting an infection in the middle of the season, or needing an extraction while I was 1000’s of miles from home.  As quick as my gut talked me into getting this done, my friend Hank at Edge CycleSports referred me to an oral surgeon who is also a cyclist, I discussed the timing of the procedure with my coach, and alas…I made my appointment.

AND… I did not back out!!!!  Although I was tempted to cancel since the “problem” seemed to go away, I did not.   Yesterday… after a very solid block of training and on the first day of my rest week, I did it.  They are gone.  All 4 of them.  Yippee.

According to the doctor, things went very well.  There was no drilling required, and the teeth essentially popped right out.  (Prayers answered!!!!)   I have no idea how they pulled them out, or what they did to me, but I DID not want to know, and I DO not want to know right now.  Remember… I am a dental wuss.  I will get the stitches out on Monday, and maybe then I will explore the issue.

For now, I am happy that I do not need any pain medication, and I can enjoy my week of rest.  And YES… A is for Amber… because even though I spent the first 12 hours after surgery with gauze packed in my mouth, ice packs ace banded around my head, and slobber dripping down my chin, I still look a little bit like a chipmunk.
