“I have the need… the need for speed!” Do you remember that line between Maverick and Goose in Top Gun? I realize that half of my teammates were either in diapers, or weren’t born yet when that movie came out, but I remember it! In fact, I painted my downhill ski helmet to look just like Maverick’s! Made a great halloween costume. Well, it is time to ride fast. No more lollygagging… ha ha ha… Not that I ever lollygag… except when I am wasted from my training ride or the training mesocycle, and I know that if I don’t rest, then I won’t be able to do it all over again the next day or mesocycle! Anyway, what I mean is that it is time for my legs and my ticker to get ready to race! The legs need SPEED, and the engine needs to begin feeling some top end efforts. Thankfully, I am married to an awesome guy who is capable and willing to go to work early… or stay late... or give up a Saturday morning, so that he can drive a motor scooter all over town while my legs spin around 100’s of times per minute behind. AND in addition to my FABULOUS driver, I am very grateful for my sweet, red GENUINE Buddy 125 scooter to wheel suck. I don’t live in the best area to motorpace, but at least my driver and the stallion are top quality. We do our best, and in the process, we provide a rolling novelty act for all the traffic. Usually, by this time of the year, I have done a little bit of local racing with the men. However, this year, the mad scientist (aka my coach Dave,) cooked up a slightly different off season. He is always trying to make small changes to keep me challenged and progressing. To be honest, I haven’t really missed riding my bike around a 4 corner, flat, industrial park for 2 hrs on Sundays. But now… now, I need the speed. It is almost time to start racing. Hence… I have started to motorpace. Giddy up! Yes… it is that time of the year again. Let the games and the travel begin. I leave for Europe on Saturday. I am heading directly to Italy for the first European world cup. It takes place in the Varese region (northern) of Italy on Monday, Mar 24. I will arrive on Sunday evening, the night before. I will sleep like a rock, and since I will have no idea where I am on race day, my body will not know that it is jet lagged. I expect to feel fantastic ;) Seriously, I personally feel better that first day then the next, and since I am not going to Europe many days before this race, it is better for me to go as close to it as possible. (And… the ticket was a little cheaper) I will keep you posted with race reports and other miscellaneous musings. More often than recently… I promise… I promise to do my best. FYI – If you are in the market for a scooter, I highly recommend Genuine’s. They are very cool to look at, and they are super fun to drive. (Not only that, but it costs about 4 bucks to fill up the tank!) AND please go through the USWCDP, because then you will also be supporting women’s cycling. |
