I know that sounds really glamorous, however, consider the fact that I just made a trans-Atlantic flight two weeks ago, I am headed to some kind of “race hotel” for the week, and then I will be back on another trans-Atlantic flight in seven days. Of course in between I am doing what I love to do, and what I am so blessed to do, which is to race my bike!!! In my humble opinion, there is not a cooler job in the world. BUT, just remember that we are women, and the sport is cycling. The budgets are small, the travel is in the sardine section, and the hotels might have stars associated with them. The payoff is the chance to live and pursue a dream. It has been great to be home. I have had a chance to visit family from near and far, to unpack my bags, to complicate my coach’s life again (at least in person,) and even to go on a bike ride with my husband. Imagine that! Anyway, since I was on the road for a long time (9 weeks) in the spring, I am trying to get some training in while spending more time at home than on the road. Hence, I will be making a trip over and back for the Ekumeen Bira (2.1) stage race in Spain, and then again for the Giro di Italia. There are trade offs, but at this time of the year, it is necessary. I need time to build back up again for the second half of the season. I also just need to see my husband. And… the next question that I keep hearing is whether I know about the Olympic team. And… the answer is that I am still in wait mode. A selection committee will meet in late June, and the official word will be announced on July 1. Until then, I will wait. It is always hard to wait, but I cannot worry about things. Just as I was not worried when I found out about my melanoma last winter, I cannot worry about the Olympic selection. My faith keeps me focused and at peace with my eyes on a bigger picture. On the Dutch Olympic front, my Flexpoint teammate Mirjam Melchers-van Poppel was named to her team!!! Pretty cool. If you don’t know her story, she has made a very amazing comeback from a horrific crash. Ok. My race starts on Thursday and finishes on Sunday. There is a double day on Saturday. I will post a report when I get home. |
